Hikari

Creating Hikari

A guarded mind, a deliberate design

Designed For Restraint

Hikari’s character design reflects restraint rather than absence. Though his vision was never fully compromised, his light sensitivity, a result of being born inside the experiment facility, informs many through his visual gear choice. His clothing is oversized and slightly baggy, designed for comfort and function over presence. It allows him to move freely through the Underground while visually receding into the environment, being a character who works best when unnoticed.

Colour As Contradiction

The most intentional choice is his colour palette. Despite his personality being sharp, easily irritated, and emotionally “grey,” that colour is entirely absent from his design. This contradiction is deliberate: Hikari hides his trauma rather than wearing it.

What Lies Beneath

Where others externalise pain through armour or markings, he conceals it, only revealing what lies beneath when he decides it’s safe.

Lore And Legend

Hikari’s earliest memories are fractured

Fractured Memories

He remembers little before the age of seven. Only harsh overhead lights, the cold rhythm of being wheeled from room to room, and days when his legs wouldn’t hold him steady. Movement was something that had to be relearned again and again. There were moments at the window. Watching feathers and fur move freely beyond the glass, wondering if that world belonged to him at all.

A Voice In Defiance

He remembers a voice more clearly than faces, raised in defiance against lab coats, refusing to quiet down. That voice would eventually take shape as a twelve-year-old black cat with spiked fur, moved to the bed beside his own. She told him of fairy tales of the utopia that was waiting beyond the gates and she fought anyone who tried to take him away, sometimes literally, biting hands that reached too close.

The Need To Escape

Then one day, she returned, different. Silent. Her eyesight had been taken in an experiment meant to observe behavioural change. It was then that Hikari spoke for the first time. “We have to get out.”
